Marine Biotechnology

More than 70 % of the surface of the planet Earth is water, most of which constitutes the oceans. Surprisingly, very little is known of the life forms in this environment. Among the micro-organisms, less than 1 % can be cultured, making the study of their life very difficult. With the development of new methods within molecular biology, new possibilities have emerged for studying the life in the oceans. This has created an increasing interest in marine biotechnology, or blue biotechnology, where bio-prospecting and biodiscovery may open new possibilities for commercial exploitation of the oceans.

TabCon's contribution

Torger Børresen is contracted to work for the ERA-NET MarineBiotech (ERA-MBT), consisting of 19 partners in 14 European Countries.

Funded under EU's 7th Framework Programme (FP7) ERA-NET scheme, ERA-MBT is a consortium of national funding bodies seeking complementarities between national activities to pool resources to undertake joint funding of transnational projects in the area of Marine Biotechnology. Cooperation between the funding bodies has been initiated during the FP7 supported ERA-NET Preparatory Action in Marine Biotechnology, CSA MarineBiotech.

European Society for Marine Biotechnology

Torger Børresen is presently board member of the European Society for Marine
Biotechnology (ESMB)
. He served as the president for the society 2013-15.

The ESMB is the European body for promoting marine biotechnology in Europe and functions as a marine biotech hub for dissemination of marine biotech activities and policies in Europe. The ESMB promotes closer research collaboration between marine biotechnologists and streams information on activities in the field.

ESMB organises workshops and conferences and runs a training platform.

ESMB's official journal is Marine Biotechnology.
